Project Prakash aur Pani is a unique initiative by Humjoli Foundation aimed at improving menstrual health and hygiene for women in the remote village of Gadchiroli, Maharashtra.
The project is centred around the living conditions of ‘Period Huts,’ traditional spaces where women spend their menstruating days in seclusion and exile. Humjoli Foundation transformed these huts into safer and more comfortable environments by ensuring proper lighting (Prakash) and access to clean water (Pani).
In its first phase of project, Humjoli Foundation provided rechargeable solar lamps and large water containers to 100 period huts.
In the initial phase of Project Prakash aur Pani, Humjoli Foundation distributed rechargeable solar lamps and large water containers to 100 period huts in villages of Gadchiroli district. These interventions addressed two critical needs: reliable lighting (Prakash) and access to clean water (Pani).
The provision of solar lamps allowed women to feel safer and more secure during their time in the huts, especially at night, reducing their vulnerability to accidents or potential safety risks in poorly lit areas.
The availability of large water containers ensured that women had easy access to clean water for personal hygiene and drinking, which was previously a challenge. This not only improved hygiene practices but also significantly reduced the burden of carrying water from distant sources.
Together, these improvements transformed the period huts into more dignified and practical spaces, enhancing the overall well-being of the women during their menstrual cycles.
By addressing these basic yet crucial needs, the project provided much-needed basic amenities and created spaces where women feel safe and supported, thereby fostering a healthier and more inclusive community.
